The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has trained 500 youths on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) autogas conversion as part of efforts to promote skills development and economic empowerment in the Niger Delta.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony held at Dakkada Skills Acquisition Centre in Ikot Ada-Idem, Akwa Ibom State, the Managing Director of NDDC, Samuel Ogbuku, described the initiative as a strategic step toward securing a brighter future for youths in the region.
He urged the beneficiaries to embrace continuous self-development to remain competitive, noting that the CNG sector offers vast opportunities amid ongoing shifts in the energy industry.
Ogbuku explained that participants were selected from the commission’s database based on their chosen skill areas, adding that the programme equipped them with practical knowledge in welding, fabrication, safety procedures, mechanical and electrical systems, as well as calibration using computer-based tools.
He further assured that the commission would provide support to enable the graduates acquire conversion equipment, establish their own businesses, and train others, revealing plans to create state clusters to enhance collaboration and growth.
Also speaking, Governor Umo Eno commended the initiative, noting its alignment with the Renewed Hope Initiative of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Enobong Uwa, the governor pledged continued partnership with the NDDC to drive sustainable development in the region.
Some of the beneficiaries, including Bright Ogolo and Elvina Ighoraye, expressed appreciation for the opportunity, stating that the training would help reduce environmental challenges and cut transportation costs.
