MultiChoice Nigeria, owners of DStv and GOtv pay television, has reduced its decoder fee by 50 percent amid the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) plan to arraign its Chief Executive Officer, John Ugbe, in court over obstruction of investigation and other allegations.
In a statement on Tuesday, signed by Ugbe, the company announced a significant decoder price drop.
The company, however, stated that the price slash was in response to “to the noticeable economic impact on the everyday lives of Nigerians.”
“We want to ensure our customers feel appreciated and have access to the best entertainment every day”, the company added.
The company’s reduction comes after FCCPC on Tuesday filed charges to arraign Ugbe and top directors of the firm over allegations of obstructing investigations.
Also in May May 8, 2025 the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed MultiChoice Nigeria Limited’s suit seeking to uphold its DStv and GOtv price latest increases in Nigeria. The ruling handed FCCPC victory over MultiChoice Nigeria regarding arbitrary price hike of its subscription.
Outside FCCPC pressure on MultiChoice Nigeria, the company had lost 1.4 million subscribers between March 2023 and March 2025.
The development is not unconnected to MultiChoice Nigeria several price hikes in the last two years.
The company increased its DStv and GOtv bouquet prices three times within 12 months — first in April 2023, followed by another hike in November 2023, and a third announced in April 2024, which took effect on May 1.
