A 23-year-old man identified as Sodiq Adeleke has been arrested in Oyo State after Police found the head of a six-year-old girl in his possession.
The spokesperson of the State Police Command, Ayanlade Olayinka, in a statement on Sunday said the incident occurred on Saturday, April 11, in Adigun Village, Olorunda Ogunsola area of Ona-Ara Local Government Area.
According to Olayinka, the command acted on information that a young girl had been unlawfully killed and her head severed.
He stated that the Commissioner of Police, Ayodeji Olugbenga, immediately directed operatives to move to the scene, secure the exhibit, and arrest the suspect despite resistance from an angry mob.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Akorede allegedly killed a six-year-old girl identified as Mutiyatu Sunday and severed her head, which was recovered from him.
Upon interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to the crime. He was taken to a medical facility for treatment of injuries sustained from the mob attack and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet investigation and prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police warned against jungle justice, stating that it obstructs proper investigation and the course of justice.
The command also urged residents to remain law-abiding and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
