The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), has warned residents against indiscriminate dumping of refuse as such unhealthy behaviour portends negative consequences for the environment.

According to a statement signed by the Managing Director of LAWMA, Mr. Ibrahim Odumboni, the State government, through Ministry of The Environment and Water Resources, had, since the beginning of the year, embarked on a massive cleaning and desilting of canals, drainages and water outlets to ensure the free flow of water during rainfall.

He, however, pointed out that despite all efforts and commitment of the government some people still dump refuse indiscriminately into drainages, canals and water outlets, thereby frustrating the efforts of the State government in ensuring a floodless and clean environment for the people.

While assuring that LAWMA is fully committed to achieving the set goals and objectives for a clean environment, Odumboni warned that anyone caught dumping refuse indiscriminately will be prosecuted in accordance with the law to serve as a deterrent to others.

The Managing Director reiterated the Authority’s assurance that the T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda of the present administration would be fully achieved despite the nonchalant attitude of some residents towards a sustainable, clean and healthy environment in the State.

His words: “Most of our canals, gutters, drainage channels and water outlets function perfectly anytime it rains due to the concerted and deliberate efforts of relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to ensure a sustainable, clean environment that is healthy and conducive for every Lagosian”.

Odumboni also enjoined all residents to patronise PSP operators, ensure prompt payment of bills and containerise their wastes while shunning all forms of indiscriminate dumping of refuse and unhealthy environmental habits.
