The Lagos State Government is set to remove shanties and illegal structures erected around the Jakande Estate and Mayegun, in Ajah.

Mr Olusegun Olaoye, the Public Affairs Officer, Lagos State Building Control Agency, said this in a statement on Sunday in Lagos.

Olaoye said that relocation notices and warnings had been given since the past two years.

He quoted Dr Olajide Babatunde, the Special Adviser to the Governor on eGIS and Urban Development, as saying this during an inspection of the area on Sunday in Lagos.

Babatunde expressed dissatisfaction the way and manner unplanned construction was put up in Jakande Estate and Mayegun.

He said that spaces that should be clear for various reasons, like building distance from the road (setbacks) and proper water flow (drainage), were being blocked by these structures.

Babatunde lamented that the planned Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Project was being negatively affected by the construction.

He advised occupants of these shanties and illegal structures to vacate with immediate effect.

He said that the government would not give further notice before removal of the structures.

Babatunde said, “Removal notices had been served severally on the occupants of these shanties but they have remained adamant.

“You can see that some of them have started removing the illegal structures themselves but, I will implore those yet to comply to do so immediately as removal of these illegal structures begins today.”

Those who accompanied the special adviser on the inspection tour include the Permanent Secretary, Office of Urban development, Mr Sodeinde Nurudeen, General Manager, State Building Control Agency, Mr Gbolahan Oki, and some security officials.
