Taraba State’s political landscape shifted sharply this week following Governor Dr. Kefas Agbu’s defection from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress, APC, a move that has generated intense debate among residents and political watchers.

While critics suggest the governor is seeking greater political leverage, the APC State Chairman, Ibrahim Tukur El-Suldi, has dismissed such claims, insisting the defection should be viewed as a catalyst for improved governance.

Speaking on Sunday in Jalingo, on the development, El-Suldi said Governor Agbu’s move presents “an opportunity for positive administrative transformation,” adding that he expects the governor to perform better under the APC platform.

“Contrary to public perception that the governor’s performance under the PDP was unimpressive, I strongly believe he will perform better under the APC,” he said. “If he once had PDP blood in him, once he joins APC, a progressive party, we will infuse him with our progressive ideology and values. I assure you, he will turn a new leaf and deliver even better governance.”

Addressing concerns about possible restructuring of party leadership to accommodate the governor’s supporters, El-Suldi clarified that the APC’s existing structure will remain unchanged until its current tenure expires in March 2026.

“From the state down to the ward level, the structure will remain intact until the official timetable for congresses is released,” he stated. “That will be the appropriate time for the governor and other new members to build alliances and integrate fully into the party.”

El-Suldi also stressed that despite the presence of competing interests within the party, the APC remains stable and united.

“We have our internal competitions, but that’s the beauty of democracy. What’s important is that APC remains one strong and cohesive family,” he said.

Responding to speculation that Governor Agbu may receive an automatic ticket in future elections, the chairman dismissed the idea, reaffirming the party’s commitment to fairness and internal democracy.

“APC is a democratic and progressive party that upholds equality among its members. Every aspirant, including Governor Kefas Agbu, will go through the same transparent process. There will be no special or preferential treatment for anyone,” he said.

El-Suldi expressed optimism that the governor’s entry into the APC will strengthen governance in Taraba State and advance the party’s vision of progress and unity.
