Avian Influenza,known as ‘bird flu’ a highly contagious viral infection of birds affecting mainly chickens, has been confirmed in Katsina State.
This was disclosed to newsmen by the Special Adviser to the Katsina State Governor on Livestock and Grazing Reserve, Dr Lawal Bagiwa in his office.
According to him, the virus was detected at an animal farm in Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State.
Dr. Bagiwa also stressed that efforts are already in place by the Katsina State government too curtail the virus and prevent its further spread.
Avian Influenza, also known as bird flu, causes up to 100 per cent mortality in domestic chickens or turkeys.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), said that Kano, Plateau, Bauchi, Gombe, Nasarawa, Kaduna and the Niger States are all hit by the virus.
This type of flu is most often contracted by contact with sick birds, and can also be passed from person to person. It spreads by airborne respiratory droplets (coughs or sneezes).
Symptoms begin within two to eight days, and are like the common flu. Cough, fever, sore throat, muscle aches, headache and shortness of breath may occur.
