A Kano magistrate court has sentenced one Ibrahim Abubakar to three months in prison for burning vehicle tyres on the road.
The Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change dragged the convict to court over charges bordering on violation of pollution control and public health laws.
Abubakar was arrested by police patrol officers in the Tukuntawa Gidan Radio area for burning vehicle tires, which posed significant health risks to the public due to the toxic smoke emitted.
Following repeated complains from residents of the area, the Director of Pollution Control, Ibrahim Nasir, led an inspection team to the area and effected the arrest and arraignment of the convict before the Magistrate Court.
During the trial, the prosecution team tendered compelling evidence that highlighted the serious harm caused by Abubakar’s actions.
Delivering her judgment in the case, the presiding magistrate held that the prosecution team proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
The court convicted Abubakar and sentenced him to three months in prison or a fine.
The Magistrate cautioned the defendant against repeating such actions, emphasizing their detrimental impact on human health.
