In the same vein, the governor approved that the death sentence on one Jibrilla Usman from the Custodial Centre in Yola Town be commuted to life sentence.

Fintiri, who took the decisions as part of activities marking Nigeria’s independence anniversary, acted on the recommendation of the Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy, and in exercise of the powers conferred on him by Section 212(i) (d) of the Constitution of Nigeria 1999.

The governor, according to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Humwashi Wonosikou, ordered the release of the three prisoners in commemoration of the 2023 Independence Day celebration.

Earlier, in his Independence Day speech, the governor had asserted that Nigeria can only be as great as Nigerians make it.

“Statehood gave Nigeria a historical opportunity to get rid of colonial oppression, to make independent decisions regarding the country’s destiny, and to create the confident future for the nation,” Fintiri said.
