Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has said that voter registration is no longer just a civic responsibility but a compulsory duty for every eligible citizen of the state.
The governor made this known on Friday while inaugurating a 36-member Committee on Voters Registration and Civic Awareness in his office.
He tasked the committee to ensure that at least 10 million voters are registered in the ongoing nationwide exercise.
Speaking on behalf of the governor, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Faruk Umar Ibrahim, described the assignment as tough but critical.
“You should know that your exercise is a Herculean task that requires diligence and dedication. Your mandate is to ensure that Kano registers an additional five million voters by the end of this exercise.”
He explained that the committee’s duty is to monitor polling units across the state and ensure that citizens collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
He also urged them to liaise with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to make sure that voter cards are made available.
“As of today, Kano is the most populous state in the federation with high political awareness,” Ibrahim said.
“We expect those who were earlier disenfranchised to seize this opportunity. Governor Yusuf is watching you, and it is only through voter registration that Kano will elect leaders of integrity with passion for development.”
Responding, the chairman of the committee and Commissioner for Information, Malam Ibrahim Waiya, said the team saw the assignment as a call to service.
