Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has officially announced his candidacy for the 2027 governorship election in Kebbi State.
Malami made the declaration in an interview on Monday, expressing unwavering confidence in his prospects.
“I have agreed to contest, and there is no retreat. God willing, we are going to win. We won’t disappoint those who believe in us,” he stated, confirming his readiness for the race despite regulations against early campaigning.
The former minister, who resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in July to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), launched a sharp critique against the current state and federal administrations.
He cited persistent insecurity and detrimental agricultural policies as his primary motivations for entering the race.
He highlighted the severe impact of banditry, stating that farmers have been forced to abandon their lands, leading to a dramatic decline in food production. Malami also pointed to the closure of long-standing local rice mills, which he attributed to “bad policies that favour foreign companies.”
Positioning his bid as a rescue mission, Malami vowed to “salvage Kebbi State” by prioritising security and reviving the agricultural economy.
He insisted that his ambition is driven not by personal gain, but by a commitment to alleviate the “daily hardship” faced by the state’s residents.
