The Federal government has issued a flood alert to 15 of the 19 northern states, advising citizens and officials in all high-risk flood zones to take immediate precautionary measures to mitigate loss of life and property.
In a circular released on Sunday in Abuja by the Federal ministry of environment’s national Flood Early Warning (FEW) center, the Federal government warned of possible flooding between August 10 and August 14 2025, following forecasts of heavy rainfall.
In the statement signed by the Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Usman Abdullahi Bokani, the 15 states on red flood alert include; Adamawa, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Kano, Niger, Taraba, Jigawa, Yobe, Zamfara, Sokoto, Borno and Kwara.
Kebbi state had the greatest number of flood prone locations, with 10 flagged towns, including; Kamba, Kangiwa, Kalgo, Ribah, Sakaba, Saminaka, Gwandu, Jega and Birnin Kebbi.
Bokani called on citizens to mobilise quickly. He also called on local authorities and state emergency management agencies to work on safeguarding lives and property.
He urged stakeholders to provide feedback on flood incidents to enable rapid response by emergency services.
