The Police Service Commission (PSC) has warned that any police officer who fails the mandatory promotion examination three times will be retired for incompetence.

Chairman of the Commission, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Hashimu Argungu, stated this on Monday, as 30 senior officers underwent the compulsory examination at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

The officers who sat for the test included one Assistant Inspector General (AIG), two Commissioners of Police (CPs), eleven Deputy Commissioners (DCPs), and sixteen Assistant Commissioners (ACPs).

“The promotion examination has come to stay as part of career progression in the Nigeria Police,” Argungu said. “Any officer that fails the examination three times will be retired at that level for obvious incompetence. The world has since embraced the era of skill, and police officers who want to advance in their career must be prepared to embrace the demands of this era.”

The PSC chairman added that the new system was designed to restore professionalism and dignity to the police, stressing that it was “better late than never.”

He also assured that the Commission was taking extra steps to ensure integrity in the process, noting, “We are giving attention to due diligence to make sure no dead or retired officers are promoted in error.”

Monday’s session took place at the Solomon Arase Chairman’s Conference Hall, where the candidates wrote their papers and are expected to appear before an oral interview panel on Tuesday.

Other members of the Commission present included retired Supreme Court Justice Paul Adamu Galumje, retired Deputy Inspectors General of Police Taiwo Lakanu and Uba Bala Ringim, retired Justice Christine Ladi Dabup, and Alhaji Abdulfatah Mohammed.
