In a determined effort to combat cybercrime, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Benin Zonal Directorate, have uncovered a cybercrime training centre in Benin City, Edo State, leading to the arrest of 25 suspected internet fraudsters.
The raid, conducted on Thursday, January 16, 2025, followed a tip-off that revealed the apartment was being used as a “Yahoo Academy” — a hub where individuals were trained in internet fraud and other illicit activities.
EFCC‘s spokesman, Dele Oyewale in a statement on Friday said acting on this intelligence, operatives moved swiftly to apprehend the suspects at the hideout.
During the operation, the team confiscated six exotic cars, several laptops, and mobile phones, all suspected to be tools used for cybercrime.
The discovery of such an organised training school highlights the growing sophistication of internet fraud in the region.
Oyewale said investigations were ongoing to unravel the extent of the suspects’ criminal network.
“We will ensure thorough investigations and bring the suspects to court as soon as possible,” he said.
The agency reiterated its commitment to eradicating cybercrime in Nigeria, calling on the public to remain vigilant and provide credible information to aid their operations.
This latest crackdown is part of the EFCC’s broader strategy to dismantle criminal syndicates and restore public confidence in the fight against financial crimes.
