The Maiduguri Zoo’s popularly known as Sanda Kyarimi Zoo Park has raised the alarm over intrusion of deadly animals into residential communities following devastating flood.

The General Manager of the zoo, Ali Abatcha on Tuesday, said 80% of the animals in the zoo have been killed by the flood while the others have escaped into the city capital.

He said the flood disaster also caused damage to properties.

“In this devastating period of flood disaster, the General Manager wishes to also announce that some deadly animals have been washed away into our communities, animals like crocodiles and snakes.

“He called on the attention of the general public to be aware and take all the necessary precautions measures to avoid these animals,” parts of the statement read.

The flood, described as worst in recent decades, had displaced thousands of residents and affected facilities, including the Post Office and the Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

Many of them are seen taking refuge under trees at the major roads.

Apart from large volume rainfall being experienced this year, the flood, according to multiple sources, is a result of leakage of the bank of Alo Dam, a major source of water supply to Maiduguri which draws its source from River Ngadda in Cameroon and the Lake Chad.
