How Disgruntled Politicians Are Fueling Insecurity to Sabotage Subsidy Reforms.
The Battle Against Graft and the Desperation of the Corrupt.
Since President Bola Tinubu announced the removal of fuel and foreign exchange (forex) subsidies in 2023, Nigeria has witnessed a surge in economic reforms aimed at stabilizing the nation’s finances and redirecting funds to critical infrastructure and social programs. However, these necessary reforms have also triggered a fierce backlash from a powerful cabal of politicians, business moguls, and beneficiaries of the old corrupt order.
For decades, Nigeria’s subsidy regime was a cesspool of fraud, with trillions of naira siphoned through opaque fuel importation schemes and forex arbitrage. The removal of these subsidies has cut off the illicit cash flow that once enriched a select few, leaving them desperate, bitter, and willing to plunge the nation into chaos to regain their stolen privileges.
This investigative report exposes how these disgruntled elites have weaponized insecurity; through Boko Haram, banditry, and kidnapping; to pressure the government into reversing its reforms. Having failed to manipulate the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and other unions into mass protests, they are now resorting to a “coalition of failures” a desperate alliance of political losers, rogue security operatives, and economic saboteurs; to destabilize Nigeria.
The Subsidy Scam: Why the Corrupt Are Fighting Back
Fuel and forex subsidies were among the most corrupt systems in Nigeria’s history. According to the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), over $10 billion was lost to fuel subsidy fraud between 2009 and 2018 alone. The forex subsidy, which allowed a select few to buy dollars at official rates and sell at black-market prices, was another goldmine for the elite.
With these subsidies gone, the free money has dried up. The beneficiaries; politicians, business cartels, and even some security officials; are now fighting back through:
- Economic Sabotage (hoarding fuel, manipulating forex markets)
- Sponsoring Protests (using labor unions and civil society fronts)
- Fueling Insecurity (arming bandits, kidnappers, and insurgents)
From NLC Strikes to Bloodshed: The Escalation of Resistance.
Phase 1: The Failed NLC Strategy
Initially, the corrupt elite tried to use the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and affiliated unions to force the government into reversing the subsidy removal. Massive protests were organized, with threats of nationwide strikes. However, the government held firm, exposing how some union leaders were being bankrolled by politicians with vested interests.
Phase 2: The Rise of Artificial Scarcity and Black Market Manipulation
When protests failed, the next strategy was to create artificial fuel scarcity and forex volatility. Reports emerged of fuel being diverted to neighboring countries, while dollar racketeers inflated black-market rates to paint the government as incompetent.
Phase 3: Weaponizing Insecurity (Boko Haram, Banditry, Kidnapping)
With economic and labour strategies failing, the disgruntled elite have now resorted to their deadliest tactic: escalating insecurity.
- Banditry in the Northwest: Suddenly, bandit attacks on villages and highways have spiked, with kidnappings becoming more brazen. Intelligence reports suggest that some politicians are funding these gangs to make the country ungovernable.
- Boko Haram Resurgence: After years of decline, Boko Haram/ISWAP attacks have increased, particularly in the Northeast. Some security sources allege that certain politicians are re-arming these groups to destabilize the region.
- Kidnapping Epidemic: The abduction-for-ransom business has boomed, with high-profile kidnappings making headlines. There are suspicions that some security operatives are complicit, allowing these crimes to flourish.
The goal? To create a state of fear and chaos, forcing the government to either:
- Reinstate subsidies (so the corruption pipeline reopens)
- Declare a state of emergency (which could lead to unconstitutional power grabs)
The Last Card: The “Coalition of Failures”
Having exhausted other options, the corrupt elite are now forming a coalition of failed politicians, rogue businessmen, and compromised security figures to wage a silent war against the government. This alliance includes:
- Defeated Politicians: Those who lost elections and seek revenge.
- Business Cartels: Forex manipulators and fuel importers who profited from subsidies.
- Rogue Security Operatives: Some elements within the military and police allegedly aiding bandits and kidnappers.
Their strategy is simple: make Nigeria ungovernable, then blame the government for the chaos.
Will the Government Stand Firm or Will Corruption Win?
President Tinubu’s administration faces its biggest test yet. Will it buckle under pressure and reverse the reforms, or will it intensify the fight against corruption and insecurity?
One thing is clear: Nigeria’s corrupt elite will stop at nothing to protect their illicit wealth. If the government does not dismantle their networks and hold them accountable, the nation may descend further into anarchy.
The choice is between Nigeria’s survival and the greed of a few. The world is watching.
