The British High Commission has reiterated its commitment to promoting peace and unity in Taraba State through sustained support for peace-building initiatives.
Over the weekend, the Commission organized a training session in Jalingo, the state capital, for community leaders from Wukari, Takum, and Ussa Local Government Councils.
Speaking at the event, the Commission’s Human Rights Officer, David Snelling, underscored the need for sustainable peace and religious tolerance in the region.
The training session is part of Project Zaman-Lafiya, Taraba, an initiative implemented by the Gideon and Funmi Para-Mallam Peace Foundation with support from the British High Commission.
Commending the commitment of community leaders to peace advocacy, Snelling assured them of the Commission’s continued support.
Also speaking, Reverend Dr. Gideon Para-Mallam, a key advocate for peace, urged Nigerian authorities to allocate dedicated funding for peace-building efforts rather than relying on foreign aid.
“We cannot continue to depend on foreign donations for peace initiatives. It is time for the state and federal governments to invest more in peace-building.
Additionally, technocrats and philanthropists across the country must also set aside funds for peace efforts,” he stated.
Stakeholders from the three participating councils told Daily Post that the project’s introduction to southern Taraba has significantly reduced communal and religious crises in the region.
They lauded the foundation for fostering reconciliation among different tribes and religious groups, contributing to the overall growth and stability of the state.
