The Kano State office of the National Human Rights Commission has received 266 cases of domestic violence in the state from January to March 2022.
The commission’s Coordinator, Shehu Abdullahi, made the disclosure while speaking to journalists in Kano on Tuesday.
According to him, the commission received a total of 52 complaints in January, 153 in February and 85 in March.
The coordinator pointed out that domestic violence, abandonment of family responsibility, rights of children and gender-based violence constituted a high percentage of the cases recorded.
Abdullahi attributed the rise in cases of family matters to economic challenges.
He stressed the need for the government to review policies that would address economic challenges to move the nation forward.
The coordinator maintained that philanthropists and wealthy individuals had vital roles to play in assisting the less privileged in the society through empowerment and other programmes aimed at alleviating poverty..
