Senator Iyabo Obasanjo has endorsed the use of the consensus model for selecting political candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections, expressing her belief that the approach is the most effective way to produce credible and electable leaders.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, the former senator, who is currently seeking the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship ticket in Ogun State, argued that consensus actually reflects the collective will of the people rather than undermining it.

The daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo dismissed concerns that such arrangements sideline popular aspirants, maintaining that political parties are fundamentally driven by the desire to win.

She explained that a party would naturally gravitate toward candidates with strong grassroots support and broad appeal to avoid internal friction or electoral defeat.

“No party wants to lose,” she noted, adding that leadership is incentivized to choose candidates who resonate with the electorate to ensure victory.

Expressing confidence that this model will work in her favor for the Ogun APC primary, Obasanjo pointed to her public service record and existing popularity within the state.

She highlighted her past tenure in the Senate, noting that her earnings were often redirected into initiatives specifically designed to benefit her constituents.

For Obasanjo, the consensus process is not about ignoring the voters, but rather about a party leadership accurately reading the pulse of the people to put forward their most viable contender.
