A former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has formally resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Kwankwaso had in March announced his plans to leave the party after months of speculation about his political future.
He had told the BBC then that he would join the New Nigeria Peoples Party, (NNPP).
He communicated the decision to formally exit the party in a letter addressed to the PDP chairman of Kwankwaso Ward in Madobi Local Government Area of Kano State, on Tuesday.
He said he was resigning from the party over “some serious and irreconcilable differences.”
The letter reads, “May I begin by thanking my Ward Chairman and all friends and well wishers in my ward, and indeed from across the country and beyond for the very respectful relationship we have had and the tremendous support I have enjoyed during my stay in the PDP.
“It is with deep sense of responsibility that I write to notify you that as a result of some serious and irreconcilable differences I have reached the conclusion that my continued stay in the PDP is untenable and therefore, effective from Tuesday the 29 day of March, 2022, I have withdrawn my membership from the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.”
Over the past few weeks, there has been a wave of defection of kwankwasiyya loyalists to the New Nigeria People’s Party. With the resignation, Kwamkwaso’s imminent defection is all but confirmed.
