The Pastor of Truth and the Spirit Prophetic Church in Lagos state, Mercy Okoch, 50, and nine of her church members have been arrested following a disagreement between members of the church and Oro worshippers.

They were arrested for allegedly stoning a 25-year-old traditional worshipper, Agboola Akeem, to death during a clash on Tuesday, August 23 at about 6.30pm.

According to a police source, officers attached to the Oko Oba Police Division received a distress call that the church located at Number 2 Sanni Taiwo Lawal street in Oko Oba, was about to be set ablaze.

The officers immediately stormed the church premises.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin in a Twitter post on Wednesday said the clash occurred as the Christian faithful were observing a vigil.

“It’s clearly a murder case. Suspects have been arrested”, Hundeyin confirmed.

It was gathered that the Oro worshippers were on a procession at night as earlier announced.

During their march, they approached the church to put out their lights and ordered everyone to face down.

But the church leadership and congregants refused, an insistence that led to a fight.

Oro, regarded as a Yoruba god, announces its presence by a whirring, roaring sound which can be heard in the neighbourhood.

Oro dresses in a robe with shells, a white wooden mask with blood smeared on the lips, and moves alongside its followers
